Learning

"Belonging, Believing, Together Achieving"

At Bellfield Primary School, our spiralling curriculum is built around the "Bellfield Big Ideas". These shape every child’s learning journey from Nursery to Year 6. These ideas give our curriculum a clear identity, a strong sense of purpose and a cohesive thread that runs through every subject, every year group and ensures our curriculum is purposeful, broad and balanced. Key learning and skills have been identified and carefully taught in a sequenced manner. We use the EYFS Framework and National Curriculum as our statutory documents, then adapt this to make learning relevant for our cohort.

Our Vision for Learning

We believe that children learn best when they feel inspired, valued and curious. Our curriculum is designed to be:

  • Personalised – rooted in the needs, interests and experiences of Bellfield pupils

  • Broad and balanced – offering rich opportunities across all subjects

  • Ambitious and inclusive – ensuring every child can thrive

  • Coherent and connected – with learning that builds meaningfully over time

The Big Ideas help us create a curriculum that is purposeful, memorable and deeply relevant to our community. They ensure that children revisit important concepts in age‑appropriate ways, developing deeper understanding as they move through the school.

Why These Big Ideas Matter

Our Big Ideas are informed by strong curriculum principles found in high‑quality educational research, the EYFS Framework and the National Curriculum:

  • Children learn more when knowledge is organised around meaningful concepts, not isolated topics

  • Revisiting ideas over time strengthens memory and deepens understanding

  • A coherent curriculum helps pupils make connections across subjects

  • Strong vocabulary and communication skills unlock learning in every area

  • Curiosity, creativity and personal development are essential for long‑term success

These principles ensure that our curriculum is not only academically ambitious but also rich in character development, cultural understanding and personal growth. The Big Ideas give Bellfield a curriculum that grows with the child. From early play‑based exploration in Nursery to more complex thinking in Key Stage 2, pupils revisit and build on the same core concepts. This creates:

  • Clear progression

  • Strong continuity

  • Deep understanding

  • A shared language for learning

Children leave Bellfield not only with strong knowledge and skills, but with confidence, curiosity and a sense of who they are in the world.
